Other pit spots along the way include: The Chapel of Rest-a final resting spot for soldiers from the Civil War, Fort Defiance- the personal home of a hero from the American Revolution and the city of Lenoir’s, namesake, General William Lenoir, The Patterson School-an educational retreat, and Laura Foster’s Grave- known from the song, Tom Dooley, a traditional folk song based on Foster’s murder in 1866.
