Lake towns get typecast as summer places. In Granite Falls, the busiest local Saturdays land after the water skiers put their boats away, when the bluegrass tent goes up at Sims and Park Square blocks off for the afternoon.
If you already live here, you have probably noticed the pattern without naming it. The fall calendar does not sprawl across the town. It collapses onto three addresses, and once you know them, the six weeks between mid-September and mid-October more or less schedule themselves.
Everything else, the concert at the J.E. Broyhill Civic Center, the drive up 321 for foothills color, the dinner reservation you actually need to make, is built around those three.
The Granite Falls Merchants Association runs Festival on Main out of the downtown block at 20 Park Square. The 2025 event drew roughly 2,000 attendees to a single stage running from 2pm to 8pm on a Saturday, with about 32 juried exhibitors, five food booths, and free admission. The 2026 date had not been posted as of early August, but the association has held it in late September for years running, and the deadlines it published for craft and food vendors sat at the end of August.
A few things worth knowing if you have only walked through it once before:
Festival on Main is a walk-up, walk-through event. There is no dedicated parking lot. The people who enjoy it most park two blocks off Main, come in on foot, and treat the 2pm opening as lunchtime rather than showing up at 5pm when the stage is loudest and the food lines are longest.
The lineup is regional and local rather than touring acts. If you want a bigger name that weekend, the J.E. Broyhill Civic Center up in Lenoir is one of the venues in the wider Granite Falls concert rotation, alongside Newton Performing Arts Center, and it is a fifteen-minute drive from downtown.
The Molasses Festival is the one out-of-towners never quite figure out, because it is not in Granite Falls proper. It runs on the grounds of Sims Country BBQ, which sits about five miles off 321 on Petra Mill Road, past Gateway School and Dudley Shoals Baptist Church.
The 43rd Annual Molasses Festival ran October 11, 2025, from 9am to 4pm on the Sims property, with live bluegrass, vendors, demonstrations, and the actual molasses boil going all day. Admission was $3 per person ages 4 and up. The 44th should land the second Saturday in October 2026 if the pattern holds, and the merchants who set up there tend to be the same faces year after year.
What the festival actually offers, beyond the molasses pot itself:
Two practical notes. Sims asks that outside food and drinks stay in the car, no alcohol at all, and pets stay home. And the parking is on grass fields, so a good rain the night before turns the exit line into a slow crawl. Locals leave by 2:30pm if the ground is soft.
The lake gets quieter after Labor Day, which is when it becomes the most useful.
The Town of Granite Falls purchased 72 acres in 2006 and developed Lakeside Park on scenic Lake Rhodhiss, sitting just upstream of the town's public water supply. The clearly marked trails work for walking, hiking, and mountain biking, with fishing decks, picnic spots, an ADA accessible fishing deck, and a binocular viewing scope. AllTrails clocks the main loop at 2.3 miles out and back, averaging about 48 minutes. That is short enough to slot in before a Festival on Main afternoon and long enough to feel like an actual walk.
The picnic shelter is reservable at the Shuford Recreation Center, which matters in October because youth soccer and family gatherings pull the calendar tight on Saturdays. If you want the shelter for a Sunday afternoon after the Molasses Festival weekend, book two weeks out.

Lake Rhodhiss is a 3,060-acre reservoir on the Catawba River in Caldwell and Burke counties, with a narrow, river-like shape and heavily forested, minimally developed shoreline that Lake Norman and Lake Wylie traded away for marina density years ago. Which is another way of saying: on an October Saturday, you can put a kayak in at Conley Creek and see three other boats all day.
The restaurant list in Granite Falls is short, and residents already know it. The point is not to introduce you to Chubby's, it is to say which spots hold up on a festival weekend when the town's population briefly doubles.
If you are hosting family from out of state during Festival on Main weekend, plan the dinner reservation before you park the car downtown. The five spots above absorb roughly the same crowd, and by 6pm they are all wait-listed.
